South Mountain Community College
I had the opportunity to be present at our inaugural "Cash & Carry" sponsored by South Mountain Community College last Friday. Pete Hernandez, who works for St Mary's in our Agency Relations Department and is focused on community outreach, coordinated with Cheryl Blain, who is a Student Advisor at SMCC, to orchestrate the event. They had set a goal of selling 40-50 boxes to folks from the surrounding South Phoenix area in an effort to help them stretch their food purchasing dollar. It was an incredible sight to see with our 40 foot tractor and trailer set up next to an array of fresh produce, bread and pastries, which make up the bonus box that goes with every food box purchase. The food boxes contain a variety of items we have purchased and in turn sell at discounted rates to those in the community who buy the box. SMCC had 10-12 volunteers assisting the customers with their selections. It was pretty special to see so many individuals volunteering their time to help their community. I also had the chance to meet Dr. Atwater who is the President of SMCC. He expressed his appreciation to all for their support in helping the college reach into the community in such a significant way. By the way.....Pete and Cheryl exceeded their goal and sold 105 boxes and have set their sights even higher for next month's date.
